Crunching numbers is what machines do better. The profession is about the stories behind the data — and those remain human work.

Eind jaren tachtig begon ik als controlerend accountant bij de Rijksaccountantsdienst. Bijna veertig jaar later omschrijf ik mijn werk het beste als AI-engineer — noem het gerust de herfst van mijn carrière, al voelde ik me zelden zo energiek.

In the late eighties I started out as an auditor with the Dutch state audit service. Almost forty years later, the best description of my work is AI engineer — call it the autumn of my career; I have rarely felt this energised.

Elke transformatie begon bij hetzelfde ongemak: werk dat een machine beter kan, werd door mensen gedaan. Dus leerde ik begin jaren negentig programmeren om mijn eigen routinewerk te automatiseren, werd ik IT-auditor toen administraties digitaal werden, bouwde ik software toen spreadsheets tekortschoten — en stortte ik me op AI toen duidelijk werd dat controle en audit fundamenteel zouden veranderen. Wat bleef: de auditor-discipline. Transparant, reproduceerbaar, met bronvermelding.

Every transformation started with the same itch: work a machine could do better was being done by people. So I taught myself to program in the early nineties to automate my own routine work, became an IT auditor when records went digital, built software when spreadsheets fell short — and threw myself into AI when it became clear that audit and control were about to change fundamentally. What stayed: the auditor's discipline. Transparent, reproducible, sources cited.

Als EDP-auditor bij de Douane stond ik mede aan de wieg van de controleaanpak voor internetbedrijven van de Belastingdienst. De postgraduate IT-audit aan de VU leverde naast de RA- ook de RE-titel op. Bij KPMG Meijburg & Co verlegde ik het accent naar douane en advisering over fiscale beheersing en Tax Control Frameworks.

As an EDP auditor at Dutch Customs I helped shape the tax administration's audit approach for internet companies. The postgraduate IT audit programme at VU Amsterdam added the RE title to the RA. At KPMG Meijburg & Co I shifted focus to customs & trade and tax control.

Met Prosperius en als partner bij DUROI (later Juyst) verschoof het zwaartepunt van adviseren naar bouwen: Curiosity, Gemstone, ContraQ, Amando en VATnumbercheck ontstonden — plus, sinds 2013, het Nederlandse distributeurschap van Arbutus Analytics. Gemstone verkocht ik in 2020 aan Inergy; het draait vandaag als liasht.nl.

With Prosperius, and as a partner at DUROI (later Juyst), the centre of gravity shifted from advising to building: Curiosity, Gemstone, ContraQ, Amando and VATnumbercheck came to life — plus, since 2013, the Dutch distributorship of Arbutus Analytics. Als Solution Architect van ROIBOT bouw ik AI-gedreven audit- en analyseoplossingen: eigen NLP-pijplijnen, agentic AI, MCP-integraties — en met Aviseo, ISObot, RA en PA de eerste AI-first platformen. Productiecode schrijf ik zelf niet meer: ik stuur een agentic workforce aan die autonoom bouwt, reviewt en test, terwijl ik me richt op architectuur, vakkennis en het harnas van controles. In 2026 richtte ik samen met Dennis Verhaert WIDE Solutions B.V. op.

As Solution Architect of ROIBOT I build AI-driven audit and analytics solutions: my own NLP pipelines, agentic AI, MCP integrations — and, with Aviseo, ISObot, RA and PA, the first AI-first platforms. I no longer write production code myself: I direct an agentic workforce that autonomously builds, reviews and tests, while I focus on architecture, domain expertise and the harness of controls. In 2026 I founded WIDE Solutions B.V. together with Dennis Verhaert.

Schrijven over technologie is makkelijk. Ik bouw de software liever zelf — en klanten gebruiken die oplossingen tot op de dag van vandaag.

Writing about technology is easy. I prefer to build the software myself — and clients use those solutions to this day.

Sinds 2000 bouwde ik zestien volwaardige oplossingen: van een beleggingswebsite met sms-notificaties in het pre-smartphone-tijdperk, via fiscale analytics-platformen — waarvan ik Gemstone in 2020 verkocht aan Inergy — tot AI-first oplossingen en autonome agentplatformen. En het werkelijke aantal toepassingen ligt daar nog ver boven: veel oplossingen zijn multi-tenant platformen waarop per klant een eigen combinatie van softwaremodules draait. Vandaag bouw ik niet meer regel voor regel: een agentic workforce schrijft, reviewt en test de code — binnen het harnas dat ik ontwerp.

Since 2000 I have built sixteen full-fledged solutions: from an investment website with text-message alerts in the pre-smartphone era, through tax analytics platforms — of which I sold Gemstone to Inergy in 2020 — to AI-first solutions and autonomous agent platforms. And the real number of applications runs far beyond that: many solutions are multi-tenant platforms running a client-specific combination of software modules. Today I no longer build line by line: an agentic workforce writes, reviews and tests the code — inside the harness I design.
